I think I could call them the driving force behind fandom and put up a convincing argument. Just think about it: what fandoms have driven America crazy in the last decade? Could anyone dissuade me from saying that they were Harry Potter, Twilight and the Hunger Games? “Avatar” may have put butts in theater seats, but you don’t hear about it… ever. No one is immersed in the world of “Avatar” except James Cameron and people who enjoy wearing Na’vi Zentai suits. “The Avengers” was pretty darn huge and, if Tumblr is any indication, a whopping portion of the people driving that fandom online do not possess a Y chromosome. Women engage in fandom to levels that men do not. When women get behind something, their sheer numbers and passion force it into the mainstream. That’s why you can name the actor who plays that werewolf kid in “Twilight” and probably sing at least the chorus to one Justin Bieber song. What do tween boys like? I have no clue. Sports? Probably sports.”

saw some discussion of gender politics wrt male/female characters in warcraft, which naturally, NATURALLY, makes me reflect (hatefully) on the summer that avali and i played on WrA

cannot tell you how many people harassed avali in a gendered way

including the dude who literally tried to force ERP on her (despite the fact that avali-character was married to adrasteius and both of them are incredibly loyal to each other)

on the flip side, i never had to deal with any of that shit. because i played a man, and adrasteius was (and remains) extremely aggressive. a lot of people thought that i was a man, in fact, and dating avali IRL. both false, both, to me, indicative of irritating and damaging stereotypes

i went to visit avali prior to all this water dropping on us and parked on the street in front of her house (like u do). it started coming down and suddenly there was a knock on the door; two fresh-faced neighbor kids were on the porch. one of them says, ‘my daddy says you should probably move your car’, and gestures to my car, which is sLOWLY BEING SUBMERGED IN RAIN

avali grabs my keys and runs out there b/c i’m a huge ball of anxiety about driving even when it’s sunny and bright and the road is completely empty

she moved my car to safer ground and got soaked for the effort
